Dementia is a growing, global challenge particularly with an ageing population. In the UK, there are over 850,000 people living with dementia, and this number is expected to more than double in the next 40 years (Alzheimer's society, 2014).
The Prime Minister's challenge on dementia - Publications - GOV.UK identified three key areas to help drive improvements in Dementia care:
- Driving improvements in health and care
- Creating dementia friendly communities that understand how to help
- Better research by March 2020
There is a great deal that can be done to help people with dementia particularly where it is diagnosed early. Having access to timely and accurate diagnosis can help people with dementia, their carers and families receive the treatment, care and support (social, emotional and psychological, as well as pharmacological) needed to continue to live well and better manage the condition and its impact.
